WHITE OAK SCHOOL
COMMUNITY LIBRARY
INTERNET ACCESS AGREEMENT FORM
2001-2002
updated 2014
The White Oak School Community Library is pleased to announce the addition of electronic mail, Internet and Distance Learning capabilities in our library facility. In order to take advantage of these services, however, patrons must agree to abide by established acceptable use regulations and must sign the attached statement of commitment.
Access to electronic mail and the Internet will enable individuals to explore thousands of libraries, databases, museums, and other repositories of information and to exchange personal communication with other Internet users around the world. The levels of access to the Internet, Distance Learning, and the use of electronic mail provided will vary according to age.
Patrons should be aware that some material accessible via the Internet might contain items that are illegal, defamatory, inaccurate, or potentially offensive. However, we believe that the benefits to patrons from access to the Internet in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration far exceed the disadvantages. Ultimately, parents and guardians of minors are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their children should follow when using media and information sources.
Therefore, we support and respect each family’s right to decide whether or not to allow their child access to the system.
Patrons are responsible for appropriate behavior on the school’s computer system. Communications on the system are often public in nature, and in all cases, general school rules for behavior and appropriate communication apply. It is expected that users will comply with the standards set forth in the District’s acceptable use regulations and with the general rules addressed below. Use of the network is a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked if abused. Users will be held personally responsible for their actions in accessing, and utilizing the school’s computer resources.
Rules:
- Avoid using the system in such a way that might harm or disrupt the work of other users.
- Never abuse or damage the computer equipment or interfere with the operation of the system by altering the software or setup in any way.
- Adhere to copyright laws and refrain from downloading or installing illegal software, or freeware on the system.
- Do not view, send, or display offensive messages or pictures, and notify the librarian immediately if you encounter materials which violate the acceptable use regulations.
- Never trespass or plagiarize work from the electronic files of other users.
- And remember, the librarian and District coordinator may, at their discretion and at anytime, review any or all system storage areas to maintain the integrity of the system and to insure that users are using the system responsibly.
- Children under 12 years old must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or responsible adult at all times while on the computer or internet.
- Unsupervised internet access for children 12-17 years old will be determined by the parent/guardian. If a parent chooses to allow a child 12-17 access to the computer/internet, the parent must sign, in person, a permission form for the child which will be kept on file at the library.
- Children 17 and under may use the computer/internet for one hour daily. The librarian may grant an extension of 30 minutes if no other patrons are waiting to use a computer.
- Adults may use the computer for 2 hours and may be granted a 30 minute extension if no other patron is waiting to use a computer.
- Those patrons using a computer for recreation must yield to those who need it for education or information.
- There is to be only one person per computer unless it is a parent supervising their child or an adult who needs assistance from a librarian or another adult.
- Patrons choosing to listen to music or other audio files must wear headphones. You may bring your own, or rent them from the library for 25 cents.
- Patrons who wish to use the computers must sign in at the front desk each time they use the computer.
- Patrons using computers will be assigned a computer during their session by a librarian. You must stay at that computer unless their is a malfunction with the computer. If computer is not working properly, notify a librarian immediately to be reassigned.
- Library staff will assist patrons with computer use if time permits, but cannot offer detailed training or technical support.
- It is the patron’s responsibility to pay for any pages they print. Current printing rates are 10 cents for black and white and 50 cents for color.
- Users must end their session and leave the terminal when their session expires. Failure to do so may result in losing internet privileges.
- Patrons, both children and adults must follow W.O Community Library’s Behavior Policy at all times. Failure to do so will result in suspension of library privileges for a determined time.
